The set in itself is neither a model nor paint: the base kit, glue and shades are bought separately. The deck of a large battleship is the most visible area of the model and at the same time the one where a two-color layout is hardest to do by hand. Masks get around that: you apply the paint with an airbrush over a ready-made stencil, and the boundary between the shades arises mechanically rather than by hand. Against a wooden veneer that is glued on, masks have the advantage of not changing the thickness of the deck and of not covering the engraving or the relief molded on the plastic part.
With masks the order of the coats is the key. Lay the lighter or opaque base shade down first, let it cure thoroughly, acrylic overnight and synthetic rather longer, and only then put the masks on. The paint under a mask has to be hard, or it will lift when the mask is pulled off. Spray the second shade in thin coats and from the edge of the mask inward rather than at right angles to the edge; less paint then creeps under. Run the airbrush at a lower pressure than you use on the large areas of the hull.
This is not a ship kit. The set holds masking material only; the model, paints and thinners are not included in the package.
