A photo-etched accessory set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the American aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in 1:350 scale. Eduard has issued a numbered series of sets for this vessel and this one is its sixth part. The parts of thin photo-etched sheet metal replace simplified plastic parts and add elements that cannot be cast in injection-molded plastic, because they would have to be disproportionately thick.
USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is the first unit of the American class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers of the same name and at the same time its pattern. It entered service in the middle of the nineteen seventies and has served in the US Navy for a very long time. Its typical features are the angled flight deck, the island shifted to starboard, the four deck elevators and the dense network of railings, platforms, nets and antennas, that is precisely the elements on which the level of the build shows in a small scale.
Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp scalpel against a hard surface, not by twisting, otherwise burrs will be left on the edge. Make the bends in a bender or between two razor blades, so that the edge is sharp and straight. The joints are made with a small amount of cyanoacrylate glue applied with the tip of a wire, and on larger areas a more slowly setting type helps, because it gives time for lining the part up. Degrease the sheet metal before painting and spray a primer on, otherwise the paint does not hold on the smooth metal. Fit the railings, the ladders and the fine superstructure elements only onto painted decks and superstructures, as touching up is then done more easily.
