Drawing the boundary between the color of the deck and the color of the margin by hand is the commonest place where an otherwise good ship model in 1:350 scale loses out. A brush stroke always has an uneven thickness, and at this scale that unevenness reads as a mistake. A pre-cut mask moves the problem from the hand to the material: the boundary arises where the film ends and is the same along its whole length. The second advantage is repeatability; the starboard and port sides come out identical, which freehand practically never achieves.
A mask holds only as well as the base under it. The ideal is a smooth, well-cured coat with no grain; on a roughly dried or dusty area the film will not sit down and paint creeps under. Once laid, press the mask down firmly with a finger or a stick around the whole perimeter, above all around the cut-outs. Do not spray heavy wet coats; two or three fine passes work best, with a short pause between them. Depth of color comes from repetition, not from a lot of paint at once.
