A set of waterslide decals with the lettering for tire sidewalls for models of Formula cars in 1:12 scale. It covers ten racing seasons from 1980 to 1989, so it holds several forms of the lettering as it changed over the decade. It is not a kit and not a set of tires, only the markings for them.
A model of a Formula car in 1:12 scale has wheels the size of a palm, and a bare black tire sidewall shows on it at once. The lettering breaks the sidewall up visually and gives the wheel scale. On the cars of the 1980s the tire markings are also one of the few recognition features that can be shown on black rubber, so without them an otherwise carefully built model looks unfinished.
Rubber is the worst possible ground for a decal: it is matte, flexible and often greasy from plasticizers. So wash and degrease the tire sidewall first and apply a narrow band of gloss varnish to it, which gives the decal a smooth surface. Lay the decal down in short sections and keep checking that the lettering stays the same distance from the edge. Use a softener carefully, as on rubber it can draw the film into wrinkles. Once dry, go over it with matte varnish.
