A publication of the Ultra Detail Guide series from the Japanese publisher Komakai, focused on the Sauber-Mercedes C9 sports prototype in its 1989 form. It is not a kit or a set of parts, but a standalone title for a modeler's bookshelf.
The C9 belonged to Group C, that is among endurance prototypes with a prescribed fuel consumption limit. It was powered by a turbocharged five-liter Mercedes-Benz V8 and the car became famous for extraordinary speeds on the long straight at Le Mans. The year 1989 was its peak: at Le Mans cars of this type took first and second place, and the brand added the world sportscar championship title to that. With this generation Mercedes also returned to silver paint and thereby picked up the prewar tradition of the Silver Arrows. The change from the earlier dark sponsor scheme to silver is an important mark for a modeler in telling the years apart. Jochen Mass, Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens took turns at the wheel of the winning car.
Silver paints are merciless to surface preparation, and the smooth body of the C9 only emphasizes that. A title that keeps to one car helps with the placement of the lettering and with the form of the engine bay and the chassis.
