Type 91 Black is a black shade from the Number Five line. The Type designation in this line belongs to a British stable whose single-seaters of the turn of the 1970s and 1980s raced in black with the gold lines of a tobacco sponsor. The ninety-one is one of them.
The car with the type number 91 entered in 1982 and its best-known moment is the victory of Elio de Angelis in Austria, where at the line he held off a closing Keke Rosberg by a few hundredths. It was the last triumph the founder of the stable, Colin Chapman, lived to see. Black on these single-seaters was not a complement: it covered the whole body including the engine cover and the downforce wings, and the gold lines merely framed it. On a model what therefore decides is whether the black surface stays even along the whole length of the car.
It aims at builders of single-seaters and historic racing cars who are after a deep black without a grayish cast. The line also keeps further black shades tied to the type numbers of the same stable, so a builder has a choice depending on which season is being built. Use outside formula racing is of course open, as black suits small parts anywhere.
