The North American P-51D Mustang was an American single-engine fighter that escorted bomber formations over long distances. The D version has a cut-down rear fuselage and a teardrop canopy, so the cockpit can be seen into from practically every side. On a model that means an unfinished cockpit shows at once. This set is aimed at the early version, and the manufacturer issues a separate variant for late machines.

The elements have a real thickness, so once seated the instrument panel and the side consoles look three-dimensional rather than printed on. The instrument lettering, the colors and the seat belts are finished at the factory. The set is prepared for the P-51D kit by Airfix.
Elements of the QD range are applied the wet way. The decal paper is only a carrier: cut the part out, leave it in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slide it into place. The elements have no adhesive layer of their own and hold on a gloss varnish of the Future, Klear or Tamiya X-22 type. Paint the surfaces under the elements in the base cockpit shade first, therefore, cover them with the varnish, let them dry completely and degrease them; a dark base plays down any light edges. Slide the element off the backing paper into place, check its position and soak the excess water up with a soft tool from the center toward the edges. In heavily shaped places a drop of cyanoacrylate glue helps. Do not use a decal softener or a decal fixer, because the chemicals attack the printed resin.
The set suits a modeler who wants a well worked out Mustang cockpit but does not want to paint the tiny gauges with a brush. The extent of the set and the placement of the elements are given in the manufacturer's instructions. The package contains the elements on the sheet only; the kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
