A set of cut masking templates for a model of the German light cruiser SMS Emden in 1:700 scale. It is not a kit, but an accessory to the build: the templates separate the color areas on the hull, on the deck and on the superstructures, so that tape does not have to be measured out and stuck down piece by piece. The cut matches the Emden kit from the same maker.
The Emden was a light cruiser of the Dresden class of the Imperial German Navy that at the beginning of the First World War operated in the Indian Ocean as a lone hunter of merchant ships. In a few months it captured or sank dozens of vessels, before an Australian cruiser stopped it off the Cocos Islands in November 1914. It was a ship with three funnels and a low silhouette, typical of German cruisers of that time.
In 1:700 scale, work with a magnifier and with tweezers with smooth jaws. The surface must be clean, degreased and the paint under the mask completely dry. Press the template down around its whole perimeter with a blunt tip, so that the paint does not seep under it. Spray thin coats from a shorter distance and take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried. With ships it pays to spray from the bottom upward, that is, the underwater part first and then the part above water.
