A kit of an aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1:700 scale. The full hull rendition means that the model has the whole hull including the underwater part, so it does not stop at the waterline the way the usual waterline version does.

What the full hull rendition means for the build

A full hull shows the shape of the bottom, the rudders and the propellers, that is, the part of the ship you never see on a model set at sea level. The model is then built into a cradle or onto a base and looks like a ship in dry dock. Count on the finished model needing a firm mounting: on a tall, narrow hull the upright position is easily disturbed, and with it the impression of the whole build.

Building and painting tips

• Glue the hull halves together on a flat surface and hold the joint with clamps until the glue sets.
• Paint the underwater part before you fit the superstructures, because it is hard to reach later.
• Mark the transition between the underwater color and the hull side with tape, because a sharp line is very visible on the model.
• Separate the small parts with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder away.
• Paint the flight deck separately and fit it last.
• Keep the finished model in a display case, because fine parts break easily in 1:700 scale.
