The type is one of the smaller buses that were built in quantity in the Eastern bloc for the needs of companies, institutions and excursion transport. 1:43 scale matches the usual collector car models, so the model will stand among trucks and vans without the cabinet having to make compromises over size.
Small-capacity buses made up a world of their own in Soviet transport. They did not run on the large city routes but carried workers to their plants, took sports clubs, geological parties or employees on holiday. Their production therefore did not run at the big car plants but at smaller works, which built a body onto an available chassis. The Kuban type belongs in exactly this category, and its name refers to the southern Russian region it came from. For a collector it is interesting precisely because it represents the workaday transport that period photographs capture far more often than showpiece vehicles.
On vehicles of this kind the greatest visual effect lies in the contrast between a well-kept upper body and a dusty underside. Proceed in two stages, then: finish the paint and the gloss of the whole body first and only then add dust in the lower third. The roof of small buses often carried a rack or traces of repairs, so the surface there need not be perfect. Suggest the window frames and the door rubbers with a thin dark line applied with a sharp brush in heavily thinned paint, so that the excess can be wiped away.
