The VAZ-E1101 kit is one of those models that prompt the question in a cabinet of what it actually is. The subject is an experimental vehicle that never went on sale, but whose ideas later fed into series production. 1:43 scale is ideal for pieces like this, because a collection can be extended without outgrowing the shelf.
The idea of a small front-wheel-drive car arose in Tolyatti at the end of the 1960s as a project on which young designers were to try out work on a genuinely new concept. The first running prototype was put together in December 1971 and went through road testing during 1972. The vehicle had front-wheel drive, independent MacPherson-type suspension on all four wheels and a gasoline engine of roughly 0.9 liter with an output of around 50 horsepower. Because of the short tail and the unusual proportions it was nicknamed Cheburashka. It never reached series production, but its layout became an important step toward the later small front-wheel-drive cars.
Prototypes usually have smooth, undisturbed surfaces, so every imperfection of the finish stands out on them. Look the body over against the light before painting, sand out any scratches with fine paper and polish the surface. A primer coat will show you whether the surface really is clean. Spray the paint in thin coats and let the last coat cure sufficiently, and only then polish. Glue the glazing with an adhesive that does not fog clear parts, and draw the window frames with a fine brush. On a prototype a clean, unweathered look of a test vehicle suits well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
