Three-dimensionally printed colored cockpit equipment for the Douglas A-4C Skyhawk carrier attack aircraft in 1:48 scale. The elements are carried on decal paper and applied by the wet method; the outlines match the kit from the manufacturer Hobby Boss.

The Douglas A-4C was the third production form of the light carrier attack aircraft that Ed Heinemann's team built on the idea that a small, agile machine can defend itself. The delta wing came out so short that it did not have to fold on an aircraft carrier, and the design thereby saved both weight and mechanical complexity. The form introduced in 1959 received a longer nose with a terrain-clearance radar, an autopilot and equipment for releasing a bomb from low level. About six hundred thirty of them were built, and until the arrival of the E version it was the most widespread form of the type; it flew over Vietnam with the navy and the Marine Corps and later served with reserve squadrons.
The instrument panel of the C differed noticeably from the earlier machines, because a radar scope was added to it and the main dials were rearranged around it. A plastic kit usually renders such things only as shallow relief, which the modeler then has to fill in himself. Here the approach is the opposite: the colored elements of the cockpit are printed to real depth and carried on decal paper, so they are applied like an ordinary decal but keep a three-dimensional profile once dry. The package covers the instrument panel, the side consoles, the seat and the canopy frame.
The cuts are matched to the outlines of one particular kit in 1:48 scale. It is a good idea to rid the areas under a decal of grease and to smooth them, so that the elements seat without bubbles; a matte clear coat at the end brings the sheen into line with the rest of the cockpit.
