About product

A6M2-N Rufe cockpit 1:48, 3D printing

This item is not an aircraft kit but an accessory set for one: a 3D printed resin cockpit interior for a model of the Japanese A6M2-N Rufe floatplane fighter in 1:48 scale. The 3D printing technology makes it possible to produce shapes that cannot be made in an injection mold: thin frames, full instrument panels and small levers in one piece. And on a model with the canopy slid back the cockpit is the only thing the viewer sees from close up, so the work put into the interior shows at once.

The real subject

The A6M2-N Rufe is the floatplane conversion of the well-known A6M2 fighter, developed and built by the Nakajima company. The main float under the fuselage and two auxiliary floats under the wings made it possible to operate where there was no runway, at the price of markedly worse flying performance. The cockpit stayed close to the original machine in its basic features, which makes an interior set the logical first step in upgrading the model.

Building and painting tips

First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent because of the residue from printing. Cut the print supports off with a knife or a saw and true the faces gently; thin features take less than plastic, so do not press on them. They are bonded with super glue. Paint the whole interior, weather it and bring out the edges with dry brushing before you close it into the fuselage. Always try the fit dry before gluing the fuselage halves together: a resin cockpit tends to be a little bulkier than a plastic one and sometimes the walls have to be thinned.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the A6M2-N Rufe in 1:48 scale
  • those interested in a model with the cockpit canopy slid back
  • builders who want an interior without gluing dozens of small parts
  • modelers with experience of resin and super glue

The accessory is supplied unpainted. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a stand-alone add-on to an A6M2-N Rufe model in 1:48 scale; the kit has to be obtained separately.

Super glue. Cement for plastic has no effect on resin and the joint would not hold.

Before the fuselage is closed. Once the halves are glued, you will practically not get into the cockpit with a brush.

Check the exact contents of the package on the box.
