1:48 A6M2a Reisen Control Surfaces is a set of masks for spraying the shadows of control surfaces and flaps on a model of the early version of the Reisen in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
A masking set with which a shadow is sprayed onto a finished coat of paint along the dividing lines of the moving surfaces. The result is the impression that the control surfaces and flaps are separate and slightly deflected, even though the parts of the model stay fixed.
Shading by hand with a brush around the edge of a control surface almost always looks unconvincing, because it cannot keep an even width and a soft transition. An airbrush through a die-cut mask, by contrast, gives a shadow of the same width along its whole length, with an edge that fades smoothly into the surrounding color. It is precisely that soft transition that makes the illusion work; a sharp line would give away that this is a painted effect. At the same time it remains only an optical illusion. The set does not alter the geometry of the parts in any way and does not allow the surfaces to be deflected for real.
Finish the base coat first and let it dry hard. For the shadow use the same shade darkened, not black, otherwise the effect turns sickly and looks dirty. Spray perpendicular to the mask, at lower pressure and in several passes, until the shadow reaches the intensity you want. Take the mask off before the paint cures. Finally unify the whole with matte varnish. The subject is the early version of the Japanese carrier fighter, the one that preceded the later versions with folding wingtips.
