About product

Photo-etched landing flaps for the A6M2b Zero Fighter Model 21 in 1:48 scale

This item is not an airplane kit but an accessory set of photo-etched metal parts focused, according to its name, on the landing flaps of a model of the Japanese A6M2b Zero Fighter Model 21 carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. On the real aircraft the flap is a thin sheet-metal structure with ribbing and lightening holes that injection-molded plastic cannot reproduce at a scale-correct thickness. A metal replacement is therefore one of the most rewarding modifications, because a lowered flap is immediately visible on a finished model. The manufacturer is Eduard, a Czech firm from Obrnice near Most. Check the particular contents of the package and the number of parts on the box of the set.

The real subject

The Zero Model 21 was the carrier version of the Japanese fighter with folding wing tips for operation from aircraft carriers. On aircraft of that period the landing flaps were lowered for takeoff and landing, and on the ground they were most often left closed or slightly set. Before you lower the flaps on a model, consider which situation you want to capture, because the position of the flaps also sets the whole expression of the model.

Fitting and painting tips

Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and sand the burr away. The flap area is usually only hinted at in the plastic, so allow for sanding the plastic part down so that the metal flap seats level and does not increase the profile of the wing. Make the bends over a straight edge or in a bending tool and hold small parts with tweezers. They are bonded with super glue or epoxy. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to build the Zero model with the flaps lowered.
  • Builders with experience of photo-etch and cutting into plastic.
  • Competition builds, where the thickness of the flaps is clearly visible.
  • Owners of a plastic kit of this type in 1:48 scale.

This is an accessory set, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to the name they are the landing flaps. A metal flap has a scale thickness and the fine ribbing that cannot be made in injection-molded plastic.

Yes, allow for sanding the plastic away at the flap so that the metal part seats level. How much work that means depends on the particular kit.

Super glue or slow-setting epoxy. Cement for plastic will not join metal.

The name names the landing flaps; check the rest on the box.
