Masking templates for spraying the national insignia onto a model of the Bell AH-1G Cobra in the early production form, scale 1:48. The set does not deal with the glazing of the cabin but with the markings on the surface of the airframe.
The procedure is different from decals and it is worth going through it in advance. The surface has to be smooth, dry and best of all clear coated, so that the mask has something to grip and at the same time does not pull the paint off. Transfer the template to the place, press it down around the whole perimeter and check that no gap is left anywhere - paint runs under an insignia mask more readily than under a mask for a frame, because its outline is more intricate. A light base follows, and once it has gone tacky the actual shade. If the insignia has several colors, it is applied in layers and between them the partial templates are changed, so plan the order before you start.
You will see the difference against a decal mainly on a flat finish and on an intricate surface. A decal on such an area gives itself away by a glossy border, while a sprayed insignia merges with its surroundings, because it is simply another layer of paint. A bonus on top of that: sprayed markings can be sanded, weathered and partly wiped away without risk, so a faded or oversprayed insignia can be shown faithfully.
