The Dassault-Dornier Alpha Jet came into Belgian service at the close of the 1970s as an advanced trainer and stayed in service considerably longer than was planned at the time. The example with the fuselage code AT26 was moreover given a representative task at the turn of the millennium: in the seasons 2001 to 2003 it performed as the solo display aircraft of the Belgian Air Force and for that reason wore a striking special paint scheme. It is exactly this guise of it that is the subject of the whole sheet.
The artwork covers the large-area motifs of the special finish, the national insignia, the codes on the fuselage and the markings on the fin, and completes them with the small lettering by which the display example differed from the ordinary training machines of the same school. Everything is printed on one continuous carrier film, so each motif is cut out separately and as close around the artwork as possible.
It is advisable to clear-coat the area under the decal with a gloss clear varnish, because a silvery haze forms under the film on a matte surface. Dip the cut-out piece in lukewarm water for a few seconds, let it rest on absorbent paper and only then slide it onto the model. On rounded areas a decal softening solution helps; settle large areas gradually from the center toward the edges and blot the excess water with the corner of a towel. Close the finished application with a varnish of the same degree of sheen as the rest of the surface.
The set will appeal above all to collectors of European trainers and to modelers who are building a gallery of the display aircraft of individual air forces. Special paint schemes of this kind were worn for only a few seasons, so it is a fairly narrowly defined period.
