This full photo-etched set from Eduard is devoted to the bomb bay of the Consolidated B-24J Liberator bomber in 1:48 scale. An open bomb bay belongs among the most rewarding areas of the big four-engine machine to look at, and it is exactly what the accessory focuses on. The set extends the base kit and does not make up a model on its own; count therefore on a kit of the aircraft as a necessary basis.
The bomb bay of the Liberator was solved unconventionally: the large fuselage took two separate sections and the doors did not open to the sides but rolled up along the sides of the fuselage like a roller shutter. This arrangement reduced aerodynamic drag when they were open over the target. B-24J bombers struck at refineries, transport hubs and industrial plants all over Europe, and in the Pacific they supported the advance of the Allied forces from island to island. An open model thus tells the story of a machine being prepared for a combat sortie.
Dry-fit the more complicated three-dimensional parts without glue first and check how they follow on to the fuselage of your particular kit. Make the bends in one go and decisively, as repeated bending tires the metal and breaks it. Reach for cyanoacrylate for firm joints; on busy surfaces an accelerator helps, as it speeds up the curing.
