About product

Bf 109E-3 in Swiss service 1:72 from AZ model

The kit captures the Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 fighter in the form that served with the Swiss Air Force. The scale is 1:72 and the manufacturer is the Czech company AZ model. The firm builds its kits with short-run molds, so the parts have fine surface engraving but usually call for more careful sanding of the mating surfaces than the series production of the large brands. The particular contents of the package and the range of color schemes are not stated here.

The real subject

The Bf 109E, nicknamed Emil, was a single-seat all-metal low-wing monoplane with a liquid-cooled V12 engine, retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit. The E-3 version was among the first large-series forms of the E line and differed in armament and in details of the cowling. Switzerland obtained machines of this type at the end of the 1930s as equipment for its fighter arm and operated them with its own national insignia and a national camouflage scheme that differs markedly from the original factory finish. That is exactly what makes this boxing an interesting alternative to the usual forms of the Emil.

Building and painting tips

With kits from short-run molds it pays to dry-fit the fuselage halves and the wing leading edges in advance. Cut the sprue gates off with a cutter; do not twist them off. Glue with thin cement for plastic, which runs into the joint by capillary action. Mask the cockpit, ideally with pre-cut masks, and spray over a primer so that the fine engraved lines show. The Swiss national insignia have crisp edges, so apply the decals onto gloss varnish and fix them with a softener. A final matte coat evens the surface out.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of the Bf 109 line in 1:72
  • anyone interested in less usual users of the type outside the German production form
  • modelers who like short-run kits and do not mind fine-tuning the parts
  • builders of display cases devoted to aircraft of the late 1930s

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
