1:48 decals for the American Marauder medium bomber, the second part with two marking variants.
Responsibility details are not available.
The pair of finishes for the American medium bomber comes from two different phases of the war. The first machine with the serial 42-107752 served with the 444th Bomb Squadron of the 320th Bomb Group of the Twelfth Air Force and in August 1944 stood at Decimomannu airfield in Sardinia, from where the unit struck at targets in the Mediterranean and in southern Europe. The second, 42-96071, belonged to the 584th Squadron of the 394th Bomb Group of the Ninth Air Force and is captured in May 1945 at the Cambrai-Niergnies base in northern France, that is, at the very close of the fighting.
Among crews this type had the reputation of a machine that forgives nothing: a small wing area meant a high landing speed and training on it was demanding. Once the crews got used to that, it belonged on the contrary among the bombers with very low losses in relation to the number of sorties.
The printing matches 1:48 scale and the decals are transferred with water. The kit is bought separately; what is available here are the markings and a breakdown of both finishes giving the unit, the airfield and the date.
On bombers of this period most of the markings consist of national insignia, the serial number on the vertical tail surface, the letter codes of the unit and nose art. It is precisely the last of these that tends to be the reason a builder chooses one particular machine. It pays to plan the placement of all the elements before the first of them is soaked, because large areas are difficult to line up on a rounded nose.
