A decal set in 1:48 scale from the brand Model Maker for a model of the Belgian F-16AM in the scheme marking 75 years of 2nd Squadron. The AM designation belongs to F-16As that went through the MLU upgrade program - they received new avionics and capabilities close to the later blocks without any change to the shape of the airframe. For a build that means you start from an F-16A model and keep an eye on the details of the cockpit and the aerials according to the period you choose.
Schemes for unit anniversaries are among the most rewarding subjects precisely because they are temporary. An aircraft flies in one for a single season and then goes back to an ordinary finish, so a model captures a particular, short moment. That gives the decals an even greater role: most of the effect is carried by the artwork, not by the color underneath it.
Paint the model, let the paint mature and spray it with a gloss varnish. Lay the decals on from the top down and from the larger elements to the smaller, so you have somewhere to retreat to if a position does not work out. Artwork across the fin and the fuselage spine is better applied in stages, letting the surface dry between steps. Apply the softener with a brush from above and do not press it into the material - the decal wrinkles within a minute and tightens again by itself. Once dry, even the surface out with a matte or satin varnish and only then weather it if you wish.
