An accessory resin set in 1:48 scale for the sighting unit of the M65 system on the Bell AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter in the AH-1Q and AH-1S versions. It is not a model of the helicopter but a replacement for one prominent external part, which is visible on the nose from every angle.
The AH-1 Cobra is a slender single-engine attack helicopter with a tandem cockpit, derived from the design of a transport machine. The AH-1Q version came about by converting older machines into carriers of anti-tank guided missiles, and it received the M65 weapon system, part of which is a sighting unit housed in the nose. The AH-1S version represents a further development of the same solution with a more powerful engine and a modified cockpit. The sighting unit is an angular block with optical windows that projects ahead of the cockpit and moves; on a model it therefore has a decisive effect on the silhouette of the nose.
First wash the resin parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent, so that any residue of mold release agent is removed. Cut the casting block off with a saw or a sharp cutter and sand the surface flat, so that the part seats on the nose without a gap. Sand wet and with breathing protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; degrease the area around the joint beforehand. Apply a primer before painting. The block is usually painted in the same shade as the airframe, while the optical windows are handled as a gloss black surface with a faint touch of colored sheen. Bring out the edges with drybrushing and unify the transitions with a fine wash, so that the part does not look stuck on.
The set is an accessory for a build, not a stand-alone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
