The Airacobra had its engine mounted behind the pilot, so the rows of exhaust stubs run along the sides of the fuselage roughly halfway down the aircraft and are constantly in view on the model. Plastic parts from kits tend to have the outlets blanked off and the edges thick. This 3D printed resin set replaces them with stubs flared into a flat shape known as a fishtail, with thin walls and open holes.
Fishtail, or rounded?
Airacobras flew with two shapes of exhaust stub. This set deals with the flat fishtail type; Eduard makes the rounded stubs as a separate set. It pays to compare a photograph of the particular machine you want to build, because the shape differs with the production batch.
The Bell P-39 Airacobra was an exception among American fighters in several ways at once. The Allison engine lay behind the cockpit and drove the propeller through a long shaft run under the pilot's feet, a cannon sat on the axis of the propeller and the landing gear was of the nose gear type, still unusual at the time. At high altitude the aircraft fell away for want of a turbocharger, and it did all the better down low. The Soviet Union got the most P-39s, and there it became a popular and successful fighter.
Fit the set only after the base camouflage has been sprayed; that saves you the masking. Wash the parts, cut them off the carriers and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue, ideally the gel kind, which gives you time to adjust the position. A metal look comes from a dark base coat with a metallic paint over it; darken the outlets with black and blend the transitions with dry pigments in a rusty brown shade. Apply the smoke staining along the fuselage sides thinned and in the direction of the airflow.
This is a small add-on for a plastic kit, not a model of the aircraft.
