The Gustav flew on every front from the spring of 1943 to the end of the war and went through a whole series of production modifications, from the shape of the rudder through the tall fin to the variant with a canopy giving a better view without a transverse brace. For a modeler that means one thing: the differences between the individual machines are small and the final impression is decided by the cleanliness of the surface and the accuracy of the insignia more than on types with a prominent silhouette.
That is precisely why the masking matters most here. The main content is not the metal parts but the masking. A decal is laid on a model as a thin layer on top, and if the surface is not perfectly smooth and glossy, air shows through under it and the marking silvers. A mask avoids that problem in principle: the cross is sprayed straight into the paint, so a single continuous layer arises with no edge and no risk of show-through. With German crosses and their narrow white border that is especially noticeable.
The package is prepared to the Hasegawa model. So that the mask holds and paint does not bleed under it, it pays to polish the finished base before applying it and to let the paint cure fully after the film is lifted off. Removing the mask with tweezers right after spraying is not a good idea; fresh paint tears at the edge. Let the model rest overnight and only then lift the film from the edge.
