Bf 109E-1 and Bf 109E-3 1:48, national insignia masks let the crosses and markings be sprayed straight onto the skin, with no decal carrier film.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of masks for the national insignia and markings of the Emils in 1:48 scale. The insignia are applied with an airbrush straight onto the finish, so they are created as part of the surface, not as a layer stuck on top.
The Bf 109E-1 followed the original idea of a light fighter and carried rapid-firing machine guns in the wing. The E-3 exchanged them for cannons, which changed both the effect of a hit and the tactics: the pilot got fewer rounds, but heavier ones. Both machines met in the same units and not seldom in the same flight, so their insignia and lettering matched. That is exactly why it makes sense to handle the markings for both versions with one set.
A decal always has a carrier layer, which gives itself away on a rough or matte surface by a glossy border. Over engraved panel seams it also likes to lift and trap air. A sprayed insignia has no edge, it follows the texture of the skin and the riveting and it has exactly the same sheen as the finish around it. The procedure is slower, because the paint has to dry between the individual masks, but the result comes close to a real spray job on an aircraft.
