About product

Boots of the German mountain troops Gebirgsjäger in 1:48 scale

The set contains footwear for a figure in 1:48 scale, not a model and not a whole figure. Mountain footwear differs from an ordinary military boot in shape as well as in height, and it is one of the few elements by which a figure of a mountain trooper can be recognized even without the outer dress. By exchanging it, an ordinary infantry figure can be turned into a figure of a mountain unit. The same subject comes out in further scales too, so choose the scale according to the figure.

The real subject

The mountain troops of the German army, designated Gebirgsjäger, used a tall laced leather boot intended for movement in rough country and in rocks. The sole was hobnailed around its edge, so that it held on stones and in firn, and the boot was worn with puttees or short gaiters, which protected the ankle and the lower part of the trouser leg. It is precisely the combination of a tall laced boot and puttees that is characteristic of these units, and on a modeling scene it is worth capturing accurately.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

First separate the part from the casting system with a sharp blade or a fine saw as close to the part as possible and level the trace of the sprue gate with a finer-grit sandpaper. If the set is cast in resin, wash it in lukewarm water with a detergent before painting to rid it of residues of the release agent, and choose the glue according to the material: on resin a cyanoacrylate super glue, on plastic parts a thin glue for plastic. Sand resin wet and with protection for your airways.

A leather mountain boot looks good when you build the base brown shade up in layers — a darker tone into the folds around the ankle, a lighter one on the toe and the instep. In 1:48 scale do not draw the lacing eyelet by eyelet; a thin dark line suggesting its course is enough. Suggest the hobnailed edge of the sole with a fine metallic shade on the lower edge only, so that it does not come across as coarse. Even the transition to the trouser leg or the puttee out with a two-part compound and suggest the texture of the cloth in it.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of the German mountain troops in 1:48 scale
  • Conversions of ordinary infantry figures to mountain dress
  • Builders of mountain and winter dioramas
  • Modelers who are not satisfied with footwear cast in one piece with a figure

This is an accessory for a figure, not a model on its own. The set is supplied unpainted; paints, glue and the figure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They were the mountain troops of the German army, equipped for movement in mountain country. A tall laced boot with a hobnailed sole is typical of their dress.

In shape yes, but the dress should match — combine a mountain boot with the equipment of the mountain troops, otherwise the figure will be inconsistent.

The casting covers the footwear; shape the transition to the trouser leg and any puttee yourself with a two-part modeling compound, in which you suggest the texture of the cloth.

The number is not stated here; check it after unpacking.
