About product

Breguet 14 A2 in Finnish service in 1:48 scale by FLY

This short-run injection-molded kit in 1:48 scale captures the two-seat Breguet 14 biplane in the A2 version in the form for the Finnish Air Force. Short-run tooling offers interesting subjects that the large manufacturers do not make, but the build is somewhat more laborious than with mass-produced plastic, because the parts have thicker gates and the joints call for fine-tuning. For modelers with experience it is, on the contrary, tempting work.

The real subject

The Breguet 14 was a single-engine two-seat biplane of French design from the end of the First World War. It was powered by a twelve-cylinder Renault engine and among the aircraft of its day it stood out for a structure with a substantial proportion of duralumin, thanks to which it was strong and durable. It was built in two main roles: the A2 version served for long-range reconnaissance, the B2 version as a light bomber. This kit is the reconnaissance A2. The type was built long after 1918 and was used by a number of countries including Finland, where it flew in the postwar period.

Building and painting tips

With short-run tooling, try the parts dry first and clean up the gates, and only then glue. Finish the cabin and the internal structure before you close the fuselage. With a biplane, plan the order of work in advance: it usually pays to paint the lower and the upper wing separately, to assemble the interplane struts on a jig and only at the end to run the rigging from stretched sprue or modeling thread. The fabric covering of period aircraft looks good with gentle shading of the ribs. Apply a gloss varnish under the decals and unify the surface with a matte one at the end.

Who the model is for

  • modelers of First World War and interwar aircraft
  • those interested in the Finnish Air Force and its equipment
  • builders with experience of short-run tooling and biplanes
  • collectors of the output of the FLY brand in 1:48 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The A2 was the two-seat reconnaissance version, the B2 a light bomber. This kit represents the reconnaissance A2.

Rather not. It is short-run tooling and a biplane with rigging, which calls for patience and experience.

A twelve-cylinder Renault engine. The structure of the aircraft was marked by a substantial use of duralumin.

With biplanes the rigging is usually made from stretched sprue or modeling thread that the modeler obtains himself.
