A detail set in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Eduard, intended for a plastic kit of the twin-engine aircraft Bristol Beaufighter in the Mk.VI version. It is not a kit but a targeted accessory: it replaces the main landing gear wheels, that is the part that in kits tends to be split along the axis and calls for laborious sanding of the joint right across the tread. The replacement wheels are finished in one piece, with a more sharply rendered tire pattern and a clean hub. In a display case this is a prominent place, because the model stands on it and the wheels are at the viewer's eye level.
The Bristol Beaufighter was a British twin-engine all-metal aircraft with radial engines, used as a night fighter and a strike machine. It was substantially heavier than single-engine fighters and had sturdy landing gear with heavy tires to match its weight. The Mk.VI version belonged to the later part of the development line. Because of the weight of the aircraft, the landing gear is one of the places where a model shows most clearly whether the parts match the real thing.
Cut the parts off their carriers with a sharp tool and clean the cut up with a file; never break them off. Before painting, wash them in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry. Use a primer, otherwise paint holds badly on a smooth surface. The hub and the tire are easiest to paint separately: the tread is masked with a circular mask, or the hub is touched in with a brush after the tire has been sprayed. Do not make the tires black but dark gray, because pure black looks flat at reduced scale. A final light drybrushing in a lighter shade along the edges of the tread will bring out the shape.
