Hauler 1:48 British universal carrier Mk.II. is an extensive photo-etched detail set for a plastic kit of the British tracked Universal Carrier Mk.II in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set in photo-etched sheet from the Czech maker Hauler, cut exactly for the Tamiya kit. It is not a model but an accessory: it either replaces plastic parts or supplements them with elements that cannot be made in injection-molded plastic. In its scope it is among the more extensive sets in the range, so count on its incorporation taking up a substantial part of the build.
The Universal Carrier was a British light tracked carrier with an open hull, powered by an eight-cylinder Ford engine placed in the middle of the vehicle. It was produced in enormous numbers in Britain as well as in the Commonwealth countries and served for carrying machine gun teams, towing light weapons, liaison tasks and supply in the front line. The Mk.II version is one of the production forms of this family.
Injection-molded plastic has a technological minimum thickness below which it cannot go. Everything that on the real vehicle is of thin sheet, such as covers, hinges, equipment brackets and brackets, therefore comes out oversized on a model. On a carrier with an open hull that is particularly noticeable, because the inside of the vehicle is visible and the viewer has a comparison with the surrounding parts right beside it. Photo-etched sheet is a few tenths of a millimeter thick, and in 1:48 scale the eye reads its edge as sheet metal rather than as a casting.
Cut the parts off with a scalpel or photo-etch shears on a hard surface and never break them out with your fingers. Make the bends in a bending tool, or at least between two blades; bend the metal in one stroke, as repeated working back and forth will tire it and the part will crack. Degrease the sheet with alcohol before gluing, as on greasy metal neither glue nor paint will hold. It is glued with cyanoacrylate applied with the tip of a wire, and on larger areas a slow epoxy suits, which gives time to fine-tune the position. Spray the finished photo-etched parts with primer, as otherwise the paint cracks on smooth metal and peels off during handling.
This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
