The set holds pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the cockpit glazing and for the wheel hubs. The package holds no plastic parts and no decals — it is intended for modelers who already have a MiG-31 kit in 1:48 scale and want to save themselves the slowest part of painting. The cut of the masks matches the glazing of the AMK kit, so the set is not universal.
The MiG-31 is a two-seat supersonic interceptor with a long range, which structurally followed on from an earlier high-speed type from the same design bureau. It has a tandem cockpit for a pilot and a weapon systems operator and is built for long patrol flights at high altitude. The designation BM belongs to the modernized version with reworked avionics and a widened range of usable armament.
A long two-part canopy is precisely the case where hand masking with tape takes an evening and still does not come out symmetrical. Work pane by pane: lift the mask with a scalpel, lay it in the middle of the pane and only then press it down from the center toward the edges with a soft tool, so that no fold forms anywhere. On strongly domed parts it helps to warm the glazing slightly with a hairdryer — not the mask, only the glass. Spray the paint in thin coats; the first coat should be the interior color, so that the frames do not show through. Take the mask off while the finish is fresh, and clean up any overrun with a toothpick, not with a metal point.
An add-on set, not a kit. The AMK base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
