About product

Hauler 1:48 Challenger 2 - resin and photo-etched set

This item is an add-on set in 1:48 scale which, according to the name, combines resin parts and photo-etched metal. It serves to improve a plastic kit of the British Challenger 2 main battle tank - it replaces selected simplified parts with more accurate castings and adds features that cannot be made thin enough in injection-molded plastic. It is not a model of the tank: the kit has to be owned or bought separately, as do the glue and paints.

The real subject

The Challenger 2 is a British main battle tank introduced in the 1990s, following on from the earlier Challenger 1. Characteristic of it are composite protection, a long turret and plenty of external equipment - baskets, covers, add-on armor features and accessories, which accumulate on the sides and on the turret according to the particular form. It is exactly these parts that tend to be simplified in kits and are therefore a typical target for add-on sets.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water to get rid of the mold release residue - otherwise paint will not hold on them. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc, never break them, and level the surface with a file. Protect your breathing when sanding resin, as the dust must not get into the lungs. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue, because ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on either resin or metal. Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel and bend them in a bender. Before painting, a primer goes over the whole model so that plastic, resin and metal all have the same base. Leave weathering with washes and pigments right until the end.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of modern tracked hardware in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to take a kit beyond the level of the box
  • Those with experience of both resin and photo-etched parts
  • Builders of display models and dioramas where the vehicle is in the foreground

This is an add-on set, not a complete model. The base kit, glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is an add-on set for a plastic kit of the Challenger 2 in 1:48 scale, which has to be had separately.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Ordinary cement for plastic will bond neither resin nor photo-etched metal.

Yes. Lukewarm soapy water removes the mold release residue, and without that the paint will not hold on the parts.
