An unpainted figure of a civilian person in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Hauler. It is not a kit, nor a part for a model, but a separate figure for a diorama, a vignette or a display case beside a finished model. Civilian figures are considerably rarer in modeling than military ones, and yet it is precisely they that can give a scene context: equipment among ordinary people makes a different impression from equipment standing alone.
A civilian comes into his own in urban and village views, on a village green, by a shop, at a station, at the door of a house or as a passer-by on a sidewalk with a column driving past. In a diorama he also works as a yardstick: from a human figure the viewer immediately judges the size of a building and of a vehicle, which with equipment alone never works reliably. If you are building a scene with several figures, it pays to place the civilian ones so that they look in different directions; a single gaze from the whole group looks stilted.
Civilian clothing gives more freedom than a uniform, but here too it holds that in 1:48 scale muted shades win. A saturated pure color on a small area looks like a plastic toy, so break it with a drop of gray or brown. Use several thin coats instead of one heavy one, or the folds and the features of the face will disappear. Before painting, deburr the figure with a sharp blade drawn flat, wash it in warm water with detergent, let it dry and spray a thin primer. Paint the face and the hands first, then the clothing from the top down and the footwear last. Shade with heavily thinned paint applied into the hollows, and add highlights by drybrushing only on the taut surfaces. A final matte varnish will unify the surface of the whole figure.
The figure is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and the base are not included in the package.
