A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of the tank but an accessory that is fitted to a finished plastic kit of the British Crusader cruiser tank in the Mk.I and Mk.II versions. The set is cut directly for the Tamiya kit, so the shapes of the parts follow the hull and the turret without lengthy fine-tuning.
The Crusader was a British cruiser tank built from 1940. It was designed for speed and mobility, had a low elongated silhouette and five road wheels on each side. The Mk.I and Mk.II versions carried a 2-pounder gun and were used most of all in North Africa, where above all a rapid move across open country was asked of them. The dusty environment did the machines no good, so period images show tanks with improvised covers, spare track links and a load stowed all over the hull.
Injection-molded plastic has a technological minimum thickness that cannot be gone below. Grilles, clasps, brackets and thin sheet covers therefore come out on a model many times thicker than they were in reality. Photo-etched sheet keeps its scale thinness even after painting. Cut the parts off with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with nippers, or the sheet will ripple. Make the bends in a bender or between a steel ruler and a blade. Degrease the surface with alcohol before gluing; it is bonded with a thicker super glue or with a two-part epoxy, which gives time to line the part up. Spray the metal with a primer for metals, or the paint will come away during handling.
This is an accessory set, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue, paints and tools are not included in the package.
