An injection-molded plastic kit of the American experimental Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Special Hobby. The package holds a clear part and a decal sheet with markings for the aircraft that became famous for their speed records. It is a short-run mold, so it is worth counting on more careful cleaning up of the parts.
The Skystreak was a single-engine research aircraft with a straight wing and a jet engine, which set world speed records in August 1947. It served the US Navy and the research agency NACA to measure how a structure behaves at high speeds close to the sound barrier. For good visibility during test flights it carried a striking single-color finish.
A short-run mold calls for cleaning the parts up and dry fitting them. Use thin cement on the plastic. The striking glossy surface of the real aircraft is best imitated with an airbrush over a good filler primer and a smoothly sanded base; a gloss varnish before the decals and masking of the glazing are both advisable.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
