About product

D-704 buddy tank of the Late Type in 1:48 Scale

The D-704 pod lets a combat aircraft pass fuel to another aircraft in flight without a squadron needing a specialized tanker machine. This item captures the late form of the device as it was operated roughly from the 1980s into the 2010s. It is not a model of an aircraft but a resin accessory, hung on a finished model. The early form of the same pod is issued as a separate item; the period in which your aircraft served is the only thing that decides which of them you need.

Why the store matters

Stores account for half the final impression on a model of a combat aircraft. A pod of this type has a cover with a reel drum and hose at the rear and a small turbine driven by the oncoming air at the front. A resin casting manages these shapes more sharply than injection-molded plastic, because a mold does not have to deal with parting lines and ejector pins. The late form differs from the early one in details that changed over decades of service; compare them against the documentation for your aircraft.

Building and painting tips

Wash the casting in warm water with detergent and let it dry thoroughly; mold release agent is the commonest cause of paint not holding on resin. Cut the casting block off with a saw and sand the surface wet and with respiratory protection. Glue the joints with cyanoacrylate, ideally strengthened with wire, because resin is heavier than plastic. Paint over a primer and in thin coats, otherwise the fine surface engraving will be lost. Keep the weathering restrained, as the pod tended to be fairly well looked after in service.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of carrier-based aircraft of the more recent era in 1:48 scale.
  • Modelers who put stores together according to a particular period.
  • Those with experience of resin and cyanoacrylate.
  • Collectors whose concern is convincing equipment under the wing.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

The period in which your aircraft flew decides. This set is the late form, roughly from the 1980s onward; for an older era the early variant is issued.

Yes. Mold release agent stays on the casting and paint will not hold on it. Warm water with detergent, a brush and thorough drying are enough.

The contents of the package follow the manufacturer's details. Add the markings from sources of your own as needed.

Working with resin is somewhat more demanding than with plastic, but on a single store it is a manageable step. You need a saw, abrasive paper and cyanoacrylate.
