The Oak extra autumn colors 1:48 set from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene contains fine laser-cut paper leaves with the characteristic lobed shape of an oak leaf, in an extended autumn palette. The extra colors designation refers to a more varied palette than the basic single-color version offers — and in an autumn scene it is precisely the variability of shades that decides how credible it looks. It is not a tree but a loose leaf material. The recommended scale is 1:48.
The leaves are applied to a wire or natural tree armature and to a bush of seafoam, or sprinkled loose as litter along a path, at the foot of a wall and into a ditch. The manufacturer also recommends them as an enlivening addition to combat vehicles and to models of buildings — oak foliage caught on the running gear, on a superstructure or in a roof gutter tells the story of the terrain a vehicle has driven through. An oak holds its leaves well into autumn, so it suits late scenes too.
Work on a base and with tweezers, as the leaves are very light and fly away. Spraying the armature with thin glue or matte varnish, sprinkling the leaves into it and shaking the excess back into the bag proves itself. An oak has a dense, broken-up crown, so apply the leaves in several layers and let them dry in between. For litter on the ground use thinned PVA glue with a drop of dish soap, sprinkle the foliage on loosely and let it dry without pressing it down, so that the layer stays fluffy.
