F-104 Starfighter — a resin radome in 1:48 scale

A resin accessory of the Czech brand CMK in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of an aircraft, but a replacement radome, that is the nose of the fuselage covering the radar, which you swap during the build for the plastic part from the base kit. Check the number of parts and the exact contents of the package on the packaging.

What the set is for

On the Starfighter the radome is a conspicuous element of the shape and at the same time a place where the mold seam tends to show on injection-molded parts. The resin casting comes as a single piece, so the gluing and filling of a lengthwise seam at the most exposed place on the model falls away and the shape of the nose stays clean. A number of sets of this type also offer a more accurate profile of the nose than the older mold of a kit has.

Building and painting tips

Wash the part in warm soapy water, so that the mold release agent disappears. Cut the casting block off with a saw and level the surface on abrasive paper laid on a flat board, otherwise the radome will seat askew. Try the fit dry and even out any difference in diameter by sanding from inside the fuselage, not from the casting. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue, fill the seam and sand it over wet. Radomes tend to be of a different shade from the rest of the fuselage, so it is practical to paint the part separately and attach it only after the main spraying.
