Caracal Models 1:48 F-14 Tomcat: The Early Years is a marking sheet focused on the early period of the carrier fighter's service. A model of the aircraft is not enclosed.
Responsibility details are not available.
A marking sheet in 1:48 scale with the first years of the Tomcat's service with the US Navy as its theme. It serves as a finishing accessory for a model you build separately: the package holds markings, not the airframe of the aircraft. Which machines are covered and how many there are is given in the enclosed instructions.
The F-14 was a twin-engine carrier fighter with a crew of two and a variable-geometry wing that set itself automatically in flight according to the speed. It reached the combat squadrons in the middle of the 1970s and from the start filled the role of air defense for a task force, later supplemented by reconnaissance. The early period of service has a special appeal for modelers: naval aircraft then still wore a light two-color finish and with it bold squadron insignia on the vertical tails, before low-visibility gray schemes took over in the 1980s.
The light finish of early Tomcats has nowhere to hide imperfections, so take care over unifying the surface. The large insignia on the fins have a complex shape that can easily tear during application; work slowly and in two goes rather than one. Fine accenting of the panel lines comes right at the end, so that it does not disturb the clean impression.
