LööK is the line at the Czech company Eduard that deals with the most conspicuous place in any cockpit: the instrument panel. Instead of a decal stuck onto smooth plastic you get a three-dimensional, already painted part that has depth, instrument bezels and legible display faces. The set tends to be supplemented with steel seat belts, so two small items raise the level of the interior markedly more than its extent would suggest. It is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory for an F-35B kit in 1:48 scale.
The Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II is the short takeoff and vertical landing version, built around a lift fan behind the cockpit and a swiveling exhaust nozzle. It serves above all the United States Marine Corps and also British, Italian and Japanese operators, who fly it from the decks of ships without a catapult. The cockpit of the F-35 is interesting precisely because the classic set of round dials has disappeared from it entirely: the pilot has one large panoramic display in front of him, which makes the instrument panel the visually dominant element.
The painted panel no longer needs to be painted over; it is enough to seat it and protect it from fingerprints. Work in clean gloves or hold the part with tweezers. Leave the photo-etched belts on the fret before bending, and make the bends over a sharp edge so that a natural fall of the strap is created. They are bonded with super glue in a minimum, ideally in spots. Before fitting, check the plastic panel in the kit, as sometimes the original relief has to be sanded smooth so that the new part seats without a gap. At the end a drop of gloss varnish on the display faces pays off, because the contrast between the sheen and the matte surrounding panel gives the cockpit a realistic look.
This is an accessory set, not a kit. The base model of the aircraft, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
