The set from Red Fox Studio is a color print of the instrument panels and cockpit details with 3D texture on decal paper. It is not glued on — it is applied by soaking, positioned and settled with a decal softener, exactly like a decal with markings.
The Phantom has two stations in tandem and those two stations have almost nothing to do with each other. In front is the pilot's panel full of round analog instruments grouped around the attitude indicator, at the rear the station of the weapon systems officer, dominated by the radar scope with its deep hood and laid out in a completely different way — it is more a work console than a pilot's cockpit. The modeler therefore does not do one panel twice but two different panels. The canopy is made up of two separate hinged sections and the cockpit is long, so with it open absolutely everything is visible including the side consoles and the frames between the stations. The J version is a later naval form, so inside it corresponds to the later equipment, not the original.
It is with two-seat cockpits that the difference between the options shows most. A photo-etched set means two assemblies of parts and on top of that all the painting of the scales. A decal from the box usually covers only the front panel and its flatness shows. Hand painting gauges on two complete panels stretches into long hours. A color print with texture gives both stations at once. The base has to be smooth, matte and degreased, otherwise silvering will appear. The set is intended for the Academy kit.
This is a cockpit accessory, not a kit. The kit, paints, decal softener and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
