Freedom Model Kits 1:48 F-CK-1C Ching-Kuo, the White Box release

An injection-molded plastic kit of the single-seat version of the F-CK-1 in 1:48 scale. The White Box designation in the name refers to a release in a plainly done white package; it is a separate release of the same subject alongside the manufacturer's standard boxes. The extent of the package may differ from the standard release, so it is better to check the contents before ordering.

The real subject

The F-CK-1 Ching-Kuo is a supersonic aircraft of Taiwanese domestic development from the 1980s, powered by a pair of jet engines. It was designed as a light fighter for air defense with the emphasis on a short reaction time and operation from home bases. The C version is single-seat and forms the basis of the whole line; the two-seat form carries the designation D.

Building and painting tips

The single-seat cockpit is smaller, but a well made seat and instrument panel stand out all the more for it. Before gluing the fuselage, dry-fit the seating of the cockpit tub so that the halves do not spring open. The air intakes and the wing roots deserve a check against the light, because that is exactly where a gap hides that you will not be able to correct once the model is clear coated. Spray the light gray finish over a light base, otherwise the color of the plastic shows through. Lay the decals over a gloss clear coat and press them down evenly with a decal softener; a final matting unifies the surface.
