The Fairey Battle Mk.I in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter – the British light bomber of the late 1930s, with photo-etched parts, canopy masks and decals for four RAF and RAAF machines.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the British light bomber Fairey Battle Mk.I in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter. The package contains gray plastic sprues, clear parts for the glazing, a small photo-etched fret (including seat belts), die-cut masks for the canopy and decals for four marking variants of RAF and RAAF machines. The control surfaces and the flaps are separate and can be deflected; the bomb bay doors in the wing are molded in the closed position. The interior has a level of detail sufficient for the scale.
The Fairey Battle looked modern for its time: an all-metal monoplane with retractable landing gear and a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, a marked advance over the biplanes. In reality, though, it was slow, weakly armed and without armor protection, and it carried only a small bomb load for a crew of three. The record is blunt: in the French campaign of 1940 the Battle squadrons suffered catastrophic losses – in attacks on bridges and advancing columns whole formations were shot down and losses on individual missions commonly exceeded half the aircraft sent. The highest decorations were awarded for those attacks. By the end of 1940 the type was withdrawn from the front line and saw out its service in training and auxiliary roles, among other places overseas. The Battle is not a legendary machine – it is a reminder of how quickly equipment became obsolete and what that cost the crews. That is exactly why it deserves attention in a display case.
Glue with thin cement for polystyrene, and the photo-etched parts and belts with super glue. The interior of the long tandem cockpit is clearly visible under the large glazing, so a dry brush and a wash on it pay off. Use the masks supplied on the glazing, which is extensive on this type. Watch the correct shape and seating of the canopy, and test-fit it dry. For the British camouflage scheme use a primer and an airbrush, and apply the decals over gloss varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
