This item is an aftermarket accessory, not a kit of an aircraft in its own right. Cast resin parts replace the shallow, simplified main landing gear bays that injected plastic offers with a space that has bulkheads, ribs and surface texture properly rendered. The landing gear bays are among the most closely watched places on a model in 1:48 scale: the machine stands on its wheels, the bays are open and the viewer looks into them. The manufacturer is Aires, a Czech brand specializing in resin details for aircraft models.
The Fairey Firefly Mk.I was a British two-seat carrier fighter and reconnaissance aircraft of the Second World War. The crew consisted of a pilot and an observer seated in tandem, and power came from a Rolls-Royce Griffon V12 engine with its characteristic long cowling. The aircraft served in carrier aviation and was built for operation from aircraft carriers, which called for sturdy wide-track landing gear retracting into the wing. It is precisely this design that makes the landing gear bays a prominent and clearly visible feature.
First wash the castings in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap — mold release residue would otherwise keep the paint from sticking. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc and never break them off; sand with respiratory protection, ideally wet. Open the space in the wing out step by step and keep dry-fitting until the set seats without pressure. Glue with super glue and fill the seams with putty. Lay down a primer before painting, lighten the bays with a lighter tone of the base color and bring out the depth with a dark wash followed by a light dry brush on the edges.
This is an accessory for modelers, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unpainted; paints, glue and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
