About product

Fokker E.III (1:48, Eduard Weekend Edition)

This is an injection-molded plastic kit of the German First World War fighting monoplane Fokker E.III in 1:48 scale from Eduard. The Weekend edition is a simplified release: it contains quality plastic parts and decals with several marking schemes, but no photo-etched parts and no masks (the ones known from the ProfiPACK edition are not here). As an aircraft of open construction, the model calls for rigging, which gives it the typical look of its period.

The real subject

The Fokker E.III Eindecker, the monoplane, was one of the first true fighter aircraft. It became famous for the synchronizing gear that let a machine gun fire straight through the propeller disc without damaging it. In 1915 and 1916 it gave the German air service a temporary advantage, a period nicknamed the Fokker Scourge. It was a machine with a wing controlled by warping cables and an open, simple airframe, typical of the early period of the air war.

Building and painting tips

Glue the parts with liquid cement for plastic. The most demanding job is the rigging: plan the bracing wires of the wing in advance and run them carefully, as they give the model both stiffness and an authentic look. The translucent or sagging areas of the covering can be brought out by suggesting the texture of the fabric. Take a gloss coat over the surface before the decals, and a matte coat will unify the surface at the end. Period schemes tend to be restrained, so careful work with the shades stands out all the more.

Who the model is for

  • For enthusiasts of First World War aircraft and early fighters.
  • For modelers who enjoy monoplanes and working with rigging.
  • For builders looking for a release without photo-etched parts and masks.
  • For moderately advanced and experienced modelers in 1:48 scale.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Weekend is a simplified release: it contains plastic parts and decals but no photo-etched parts and no masks. The build is therefore more straightforward.

Yes. The Fokker E.III has an open structure with a wing controlled by warping cables, so rigging gives it an authentic look as well as stiffness. It is recommended for the moderately advanced.

It was one of the first fighters with a synchronized machine gun that fired through the propeller disc. In 1915 and 1916 it gave the German air service a temporary advantage.
