A complete radar conversion for the Grumman TBM-3D Avenger in 1:48 scale from AML adds the equipment of a Pacific night searcher to the carrier aircraft. Target kit: Hasegawa.
Responsibility details are not available.
This AML conversion set serves to build the radar version of the famous Avenger carrier aircraft in 1:48 scale. According to the name it is a complete conversion into the TBM-3D version; an ordinary Avenger kit remains the basis, and the set extends it with the features of the special equipment. So it is not a model of the aircraft itself. The set is meant for the Hasegawa kit.
The TBM-3D was the search version of the Avenger built by General Motors, easily told apart by the radar pod on the leading edge of the right wing. The machines searched out Japanese ships and aircraft in darkness and guided the night fighter patrols operating from the carriers to their targets. The combination of a robust airframe, long endurance and a powerful search radar made them the eyes of the task forces at the end of the war in the Pacific.
The radar pod calls for cutting into the wing - draw the line of the cut out first and rework it in small steps, trying the fit as you go. Fill the joint and sand it smooth so that the transition looks like part of the structure. The pod on the right wing breaks the symmetry of the aircraft, so align it on the leading edge and check it by eye from the front. The Avenger has folding wings, so decide in advance whether you will build them spread or folded along the fuselage. The rest of the build follows the ordinary course of your kit's instructions.
