About product

GBU-31(V)3B JDAM 1:48 — resin armament from Eduard

The set belongs to the Brassin resin line of Eduard, which differs from the photo-etched sets both in material and in focus. Instead of thin sheet for an interior you get solid castings of external ordnance with crisp edges on the control surfaces and a smooth body. Injection-molded plastic solves these shapes with split halves, leaving the mold seam exactly where it is most visible. In 1:48 scale that is noticed immediately.

About the ordnance

The abbreviation JDAM denotes a kit that turns an unguided aerial bomb into a weapon guided by a satellite and inertial system. The kit consists of a new tail section with control surfaces and a strap-on body section on the bomb itself. The designation GBU-31 relates to the version on a heavy bomb, and the option marked as version 3 goes with a penetrating body intended against hardened targets. From the outside a guided bomb differs from an unguided one mainly in the shape of the tail, which is exactly what the casting reproduces.

Tips for working with resin

Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, otherwise the mold release agent will prevent the paint from adhering. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc and sand the surface wet with respiratory protection. They are bonded with super glue; ordinary cement for plastic will not dissolve resin. Apply a primer before painting. Modern aerial ordnance tends to be in one color with pronounced narrow bands and lettering, so spray the bands through a mask and even out the sheen with a clear coat so that any decals do not land on a matte surface. Before gluing, check dry that the bomb hangs parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft on its pylon.

Who the set is for

  • builders of modern combat aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • modelers unhappy with a split plastic casting of ordnance
  • more experienced builders with experience of resin
  • builds aimed at a faithful external stores configuration

This is an accessory set, not a standalone kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is an installation kit that turns an unguided aerial bomb into ordnance guided by a satellite and inertial system.

It is not. It is external armament that you add to a model already built in 1:48 scale.

The casting is in one piece, so there is no mold seam on the body of the bomb and the shape of the tail surfaces stays crisp.

After washing and a primer, with a covering color, and the narrow bands through masking tape. Even out the sheen with a clear coat before the decals.
