The Gnome Monosoupape 9N nine-cylinder scaled down to 1:48. The most powerful member of the family of engines with a single valve per cylinder, which at the close of the First World War turned the propellers of the Nieuport 28 fighters.
Responsibility details are not available.
The designation monosoupape gives away the principle of the whole family: instead of a pair of valves, each cylinder has only one, the exhaust valve, and the fresh mixture gets into the space through ports in the cylinder wall uncovered by the piston. The design thereby lost flexibility of control, but it was simple and light. The 9N version came in 1917 with nine cylinders and roughly one hundred sixty horsepower and was the most powerful of the monosoupapes.
The nine-cylinder 9N became most famous in the Nieuport 28 fighter, with which the first American squadrons entered the fighting on the Western Front in 1918. The engine was demanding to service, it burned castor oil and the pilots had to regulate the output by switching the ignition off, because a smooth throttle lever in today's sense was missing.
The casting in 1:48 transfers the characteristic slender cylinders with their dense finning, the valve gear cover at the front and the drive flange. Resin holds the undercut shapes that could not be drawn out of a two-part plastic mold, so a real gap stays between the cylinders.
After removing the sprue remnants, rinse the parts and let them dry, then apply a thin coat of primer. The cylinders come out when a very thin brown glaze imitating the traces of the castor oil these engines were notorious for is drawn over the metallic base. A dry brush will manage the detail of the valve gear. Anyone who wants to go to the limit can add the leads to the individual plugs from thin wire; a diameter of around 0.2 millimeters looks convincing in this scale.
