1:48 Grilles for JS-2 or JSU-122/152 is a photo-etched set of engine deck grilles from the Polish maker Aber. It replaces solid plastic covers with fine metal mesh.

This is not a kit of the vehicle but a small photo-etched accessory for models of the Soviet heavy tank designated JS-2 and of the JSU-122 and JSU-152 self-propelled guns in 1:48 scale. It settles one particular place that spoils the impression of an otherwise well-built model: the grilles over the engine deck. In a kit they tend to be molded as a solid plate with a suggested pattern, so seen from above they look blanked off. A photo-etched grille, by contrast, is see-through, thin and deeper, so the engine deck finally comes across as an opening and not as a piece of plastic.
Grilles are among the simplest and at the same time most effective detail improvements to a model of a tracked vehicle. The top surface of the hull is, after all, what is most visible on a model in a display case. The set covers two related real subjects: the Soviet heavy tank and the self-propelled guns built on the same chassis, which therefore share the layout of the engine deck. The Aber brand is a Polish maker of photo-etched accessories and turned parts, with a whole range of similar sets for various vehicles.
Break the parts out with a scalpel on a hard surface, never with scissors. Before fitting them it is advisable to sand or cut the plastic grille out of the kit, so that a real space is left under the photo-etched part and the solid floor does not show – otherwise the effect is lost. They are bonded with super glue applied in the smallest amount with the tip of a wire. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer for metal. Paint the inside of the space under the grille dark before you fit the grille. Patina holds splendidly in a grille: fine dust and dry highlighting of the edges make a big difference.
This is an accessory, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
