The Grumman F-14A Tomcat (Late Model) — Carrier Launch Set is a Tamiya plastic kit in 1:48 scale, which captures the late F-14A exactly at the moment of launch from the catapult of an aircraft carrier. The package holds a catapult shuttle, a holdback bar, a kneeling nose gear leg, a figure of a catapult officer and a paper flight deck.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the late carrier fighter Grumman F-14A Tomcat in 1:48 scale from the manufacturer Tamiya. It is not an ordinary Tomcat box — the whole release is built around a single situation: launch from the catapult of an aircraft carrier. That is why the box holds a catapult shuttle in a choice of two types, a one-piece holdback bar, a shortened, kneeling nose gear leg in the launch position, a figure of a catapult officer, the shooter, and a paper sheet with an illustration of the flight deck as a base under the model. Two crew figures in late flight gear are added. The variable-geometry wing is here fixed in the spread launch position and carries extended flaps and leading-edge slats — the sweep angle cannot be reset on this release. The decals offer four marking options (twice VF-32, once VF-211, once VF-154). The armament includes air-to-air missiles, Mk. 82 bombs, laser-guided bombs and a reconnaissance camera pod.
The F-14 Tomcat was a twin-engine two-seat carrier fighter of the United States Navy with a variable-geometry wing — spread for launch and landing, swept back in fast flight. The designation Late Model points to the late F-14A in the state in which they served roughly from the end of the 1980s to the start of the 21st century: the TCS / AAX-1 pod under the nose, the antennas of the ALR-45 radar warning receiver, a reworked gun gas vent door and the later shape of the engine covers. It is still the A version — the later F-14D is a different machine with different engines and avionics. Launch from the deck took place on a steam catapult: the aircraft hooked on with the shuttle, the holdback bar held it in place until the engines reached full thrust and the catapult officer gave the signal for release.
The kit is from polystyrene and is glued with liquid cement for plastic. Finish and paint the cockpit, the seats and the instrument panels before the fuselage is closed. Apply a primer before painting; low-visibility grays are best sprayed with an airbrush, and the model is brought to life by a fine play of shades across the individual panels plus the bringing up of the engraved lines. Clear-coat with gloss before the decals and flatten it once dry. Assemble the underwing stores and the landing gear separately and fit them only at the end — the model is then easier to hold in the hand.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
