A set of die-cut self-adhesive masks in kabuki paper for a model of the F-14A Tomcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Eduard. The designation TFace means that the set contains masks not only for the outer but also for the inner side of the glazing. With the large canopy of this type that makes practical sense: with the cockpit open the frames are visible from inside as well as outside, and masking the outside alone would leave the inner side of the frames in the color of the transparent plastic. The set is die-cut to the shape of the glazing of a particular kit and need not fit a model from another maker.
The F-14A was a two-seat carrier fighter with a variable-geometry wing, two engines and a crew of a pilot and a weapon systems officer. It served to defend carrier groups and carried a radar with a range that let it fight at long distance. The wing adjusted itself automatically in flight according to speed, and when parked it folded back to save room on the deck. The large sliding canopy with good visibility is among its hallmarks and is the main reason it pays to mask the glazing from inside on this type.
Stick the inner masks on before closing the cockpit up; once the parts are cemented together you cannot reach inside. Degrease the glazing beforehand. Place the masks with tweezers and press them down along the whole perimeter; on long straight edges work from the center toward the ends, so that the paper does not wrinkle. Spray the inner side of the frames in the interior color and then the outer side in the base shade of the airframe. Apply the paint thinly; on large areas of glazing a heavy layer readily crumbles at the edge of the mask. Remove the masks shortly after the paint has dried.
The set is an aid for painting. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
